Empowering Through Education: The Anum School
If you follow our brand, you will most likely know that we are growing our business at the same time as helping support girl’s education in a neighborhood of Karachi, Pakistan through our partnership with Anum School. Following the request of many of you willing to know more about our One Bag, One Child Program, through which we donate 3% of our revenue per bag sold to support this cause, discover more about the story below.
Despite being the most economically active and dynamic city in Pakistan, Karachi still faces huge challenges when it comes to the literacy rate of its inhabitant. According to The World Fact Book the overall Pakistan literacy rate is 57.9% and only 45.8% for women*. The situation is improving for the 15 to 24 age group and this is where we are trying to be an active part of this encouraging progress.
In 1982 a woman by the name of Mumtaz Tareen opened a medical camp in a neighborhood of Karachi, when she realized that most of the women from this neighborhood had never received any sorts of education. She knew that this needed to change, so she fought to transform her medical camp into a school. It was not an easy task. She had to fight and persist into showing the importance of the school and why the community needed it.
Today Anum school is a trusted establishment that has been taken over by Mumtaz’s son and his wife who are dedicated to growing it to offer education to as many kids as possible.
The school welcomes over 60 students aged between 5 years old to 14. A majority of them are girls who would otherwise not attend the classic government schools. They are given the opportunity to learn subjects like history, science, writing, and reading in Urdu and English along with other more pragmatic courses like hygiene, tolerance and respect. The children are split into two shifts (one in the morning, one in the afternoon) in two classrooms. They are taught by 3 teachers and 2 helpers.
"They are given the opportunity to learn subjects like history, science, writing, and reading in Urdu and English along with other more pragmatic courses like hygiene, tolerance and respect."
For the beginning of the new term, the school will welcome one new teacher and one new helper, the curriculum was updated and improved and every student will receive a new set of books at no cost. Our long-term goal is to raise enough capital for Anum School to rent a bigger facility and eventually buy its own, in order to welcome always more children.
While the opportunity for the students to be able to learn is invaluable, there is still so much room to grow and develop the school further to better the education and environment. This is why we are extremely passionate about this cause.
We are travelling to Pakistan on average every 3 months to visit our partners and it is always a precious occasion to meet the Anum School founders, visit the school to get updates and set up new priorities… and of course spend some time with the children.
We believe that Pakistan is full of amazing talents that only need to be brought to the forefront to fulfill their potential and that education has the power to do so.
